Our Story.
New Mt. Moriah M.B. Church was organized on January 17, 1971 after Rev. Marvell Williams was thoroughly convicted that to do so was the Will of God. With no place to meet, it was finally agreed upon to rent and later purchase 1709 West Roosevelt Road—which was in need of much repairs. The first meeting was held under the leadership of the late Roy Lee Williams (Chairman of the Deacon Board) and Rev. Robert Williams (our current Pastor). The two adjoining lots were later purchased with the expectation to build a church.
In March of 1971 the Gospel Choir was organized. Taking leadership roles in the organization were the late Vertlee Williams (former First Lady), Lorene Williams (our current First Lady), the late Olevia Thomas and the late Bennie Williams (the Church’s first musician).
The Usher Board was organized in June of 1971. Erma Williams was elected President and the late Versie Martin, Vice President, adding Warren Thomas and Ira Martin in the latter part of this same year.
The Pastor’s Aide Board was organized a few weeks after the Church was organized with three members: Clara Williams, Beatrice Sanders and the late Nora Martin.
The Church’s first revival was held in August of 1971—we received fifteen candidates for baptism. These candidates were baptized in the month of November this same year and our Junior Choir was organized. Some of these same Junior Choir members currently have children or grandchildren who now make up our present Inspirational and Junior Choir.
In 1984 we had outgrown the church building and moved to 1501 North Harding—eventually buying this property. We operated a daycare center at this location during the years (1984-1989); housed a Head Start Program (1989-2013); and also ministered via television during the years 2000-2011. All under the leadership of the late Pastor Marvell Williams. We thank God for his Vision and may he rest in the arms of Jesus.
Our current Pastor, Rev. Robert Williams, was elected Pastor on December 16, 2013. Under his leadership things are still moving forward because Pastor Robert knows that as God was with Moses (Pastor Marvell), so shall he be with Joshua (Pastor Robert). We are and will continue to look to Christ for this present journey and future assignments given to Pastor as under shepherd of this flock—all through Christ, The Author and Finisher of Our Faith.
God’s Grace & Mercy Brought Us This Far & Grace Will Lead Us On!
